10 Cool Uses for Dropbox (Part-I)

Print
So now that you have got a magic pocket in Dropbox for yourselves, let us put it to some cool uses. After all, we are cool people, aren't we? And those people uncool enough not to join the bandwagon, can still make amends and join the cool gang by clicking here and upgrade to a magical experience. Dropbox is just like a Pandora's box albeit in the contrary sense. There are so many clever and nifty uses for Dropbox which users like me and you have thought up to have a more fulfilling experience. This list is just a few of my favorite uses for Dropbox.

  1. Download your Torrents remotely: If you are one of those naughty people who love to download the latest Hollywood releases, you are going to love Dropbox. Picture this - You are at work and you find that the latest flick has just become available online after days of waiting and you just cannot fight off that irresistible urge to download it then and there. But damn, you have to wait till you get home in the evening which means more waiting till the download finishes. But then you realize that you have a magic pocket! You just paste the torrent file in your dropbox and voila, the download automatically begins in your bit-torrent client at your home media centre PC. The trick you ask? Many popular torrent clients like uTorrent nowadays give you the option of monitoring a particular folder for a torrent file and upon detecting the same, the download begins automatically. Now you can relax or maybe get excited reminiscing  about the evening ahead, ensconced in your plush recliner with your petite girlfriend having a magical time indeed.

  2. Use your Dropbox as "My Documents": Now that you have got your magic pocket, you still have to remember to put your important documents in it. But you are the Mr. Cool and you love to set your things on autopilot. So you just shift your entire My Documents folder to Dropbox. Just right click on your My Documents, select Properties and on the Location tab you can specify the new location to your Dropbox folder and click move. From now on, all your documents are automatically saved to your Dropbox and synced to all your computers. Just remember to exclude those large space gobbling HD videos from your new ubercool Panasonic 3D Camcorder.

  3. Omnipresent Games: You are busy surreptitiously playing your favorite game on your PC at work, right under the nose of your pesky boss and this is the first time that you are close to winning the boss battle, at least in the game. But alas, it is curtains for the day and you just cannot wait for another day to finish the game. All you have to do is to shift the game save-file to a folder in your dropbox, drive maniacally to your home, hitting a lamppost or two to keep the adrenaline pumping,  and booting up the game from the same save-file in your Dropbox folder located on your Alienware Aurora R2 Gaming Desktop. Now all you need is some quick thinking, sharp reflexes and solid punches to complete the annihilation. Ah, the sweet taste of victory!

  4. Sync iTunes across multiple computers: Ever had a situation when you wanted to listen to your favorite song on your netbook and were disappointed to find that it was actually saved in iTunes library of your HP All-in-one Desktop at your home? No more of such frustration. You can easily move your default iTunes library file to your Dropbox folder and just point all instances of iTunes across multiple computers to access the library from your Dropbox. Now you can enjoy all your music from wherever you are. But just remember to upgrade to the Dropbox Pro service with at least 50 GB space as iTunes library would normally require a lot of space depending and a measly 2 GB won't fit the bill.

  5. Share pictures wirelessly: So you just can't stop raving about your new Eye-Fi SD Card which has inbuilt wifi and geotagging. The card is capable of transmitting your photographs from a compatible camera to your PC, iPhone or Android device wirelessly. Cool! But to make it supercool, just upload to a  folder in your Dropbox Photos folder from where you can generate a Public Gallery link to easily share your photographs to all your friends and family. But do not forget to first delete those shots from the rowdy last night party before sharing.

OK guys. Let me catch some sleep till you ruminate and digest the information. Stay tuned for Part-II.
