Eye-Fi Card: Make your memories fly magically

Print
Have you ever been stuck on a holiday with a full memory card and no replacement card? Have you always found it tiresome to transfer your photos to your pc? Do you want to share your photos instantly with your social networks but don't want to use the crappy mobile cameras? Then I believe you should consider getting an Eye-Fi Card. Eye-Fi card is a SD card with built in wireless capabilities. It has been around for some years now. I had always been skeptical about the benefit of using such a thing but the latest updates had made me to reconsider. So, I bit the bullet and forked out some hard earned cash for the top of line Eye-Fi Pro X2. And boy, was I happy with my latest acquisition! The card looks like a simple SD card and can be used with multitude of compatible cameras. Many newer cameras are already having built in enhanced connectivity for Eye-Fi cards. You have to connect the card to a wireless network by first programming it with your PC or Mac. You can connect it up with multiple home  or office networks, public hotspots and now even a mobile in your pocket, that too in absence of wireless connectivity. Once you are all setup, you just go about clicking your pics as you normally do. Here is a list of cool things which this card can do to your pics are (as per the official website):

  • Performance. Store up to 4,000 photos or 3h of video with 8GB SDHC capacity with fast Class 6 read & write speeds. Ideal for high megapixel cameras.
  • Wireless. Upload photos & videos from your camera through your Wi-Fi network with unprecedented wireless performance thanks to built-in 802.11n technology.
  • Instant Uploads. Send photos and videos directly from your camera to your iPhone, iPad, Android device or laptop anywhere you are.
  • Effortless sharing. Wirelessly send your JPEG photos and videos to a popular website. See the complete list you can choose from, which includes Flickr, Facebook, Picasa and YouTube.

  • Automatic backup. Wirelessly upload photos and videos to folders of your choice on your computer, or even directly into iPhoto for Macs.
  • Compatible. No need to buy a new camera. Check here to see if your camera can be turned into a wireless uploading machine.
  • On-the-go. Upload on-the-go through one of tens of thousands of AT&T Wi-Fi HotSpots, including Starbucks, hotels, restaurants and more. (1 year of service included)
  • Geotagging. Lifetime, automatic Geotagging service (not GPS but wifi based) helps you organize and share photos. View, search and share the JPEG photos of your latest trips on a map.
  • Eye-Fi View. Free online access to your pics from last seven days, uploaded automatically. Upgrade to unlimited access for $4.99/month or $49.99/year.
  • RAW power. Wirelessly upload RAW photos to any folder on your computer to streamline your workflow.
  • Pick your pics. You can select which photos and videos upload from your camera.
  • Organized. Photos and videos can automatically be stored in date-based folders, so memories are organized effortlessly by date.
  • Get notified. Get email, Facebook, text message or Twitter alerts when your photos are uploading online.
  • Quick & sweet. Set up takes just minutes.

Whew! That is quite a feature list and believe me everything I tried really works. Eye-Fi card is available in various avatars and you may choose one according to your needs. The basic version starts from $49.99 to the feature loaded Pro X2 for $99.99 (I bought it for $89.99 on Amazon). Now, you have to just think of some cool ways to use the magical powers bestowed upon you. For starters, rock your next party by instantly displaying live photos on a large screen wirelessly.

  2. I don't know where you found this reference. I checked a couple of cameras having only Memory Stick on their compatibility page for Sony and it clearly mentions that they are incompatible. Please let me know what camera you are wanting to use this with. You can also check for your specific camera at this link, if you have not already done so. http://www.eye.fi/how-it-works/camera-compatibility

  3. Turns out that my cam does have an SD card slot which I was not aware of..! So does it go thru the computer to transfer files online or directly thru its own wifi to the router to the internet? Nitin.

  7. Yes Nitin. It should ideally transfer online without a computer. But since I was tweaking with some settings, something has gone wrong and now even with computer switched on, upload to online site is flaky and intermittent. Upload to computer is superfast, taking only 3-4 seconds for a jpg and 10 sec. for a RAW file. I would again try to reset the software and let you know.
